Head Cook
Overview
Lake Creek Youth Camp is currently looking for a Head Cook. This is a seasonal position running from mid-May through Septmeber 30th.The pay is low, $1,500 per month but includes room and board and the hours can be long during camps, but the "off" time is also long. And you get to live in a beautiful area of the Malhuer National Forest just outside the Strawberry Mt. Wilderness area.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Head Cook is responsible for planning and preparing meals and ordering food and supplies for groups ranging from 20 to 100 people, though most groups are in the 20 to 50 range. The Head Cook is assisted by other staff and volunteers.
"Camp" cooking experience is helpful but not required. Anyone with experience cooking for groups or an interest in cooking is encouraged to apply. If you have basic cooking skills we can provide on-the-job training for cooking for groups.
You will also be asked to help out with other projects between camps or with events where we don't do the cooking. This could include things like cleaning bathhouses, mowing grass, emptying trash, painting, clearing brush and slash, and other routine maintenance items and chores normally found at a camp.
Days off are flexible and plentiful between camps. However, you may be asked to "hang out" as we need at least one person on site every day to give tours and answer questions for "drop in" visitors.
Working Environment
We are a friendly and easy-going group and we work at the camp because it's fun and we want to be here. For information about the Camp, visit our "About Us" page. The normal staff complement is two - a Caretake/Manager and the cook. The manager assists the cook in the kitchen, and the cook assists the manager with routine maintenance as needed. Additional part-time help is available for larger camps. For most camps, we provide three meals per day. Therefore, the days can be long, but there are breaks and free time throughout the day. Camps may be back-to-back, or there may be one - three weeks between camps. Most camps and events are three to five days long though some can be as short as one meal.
We also host events like family reunions and weddings where the groups might provide their own food and do their own cooking.
We have a well laid out and stocked commercial kitchen with everything you need to prepare meals for groups.
You will be provided a rustic cabin for lodging though toilets and showers are in another building close by.
